Massey Ratings: Unified Strength

Methodology

Unified cross-division strength ratings place all ~280 NCAA field hockey programs on a single 0–100 scale. The model uses Massey Ratings' game prediction engine to simulate hypothetical matchups between teams across divisions, then solves a least-squares system on predicted score margins to calibrate relative strength. Unobserved teams are interpolated via smoothing splines fitted to each division's rank–strength curve.

Key Facts

  • 231 cross-division matchups analyzed
  • 83 teams directly calibrated from Massey predictions
  • ~7 points ≈ 1 predicted goal margin (e.g. a team at 80 is roughly 1.5 goals stronger than a team at 70)
  • Teams marked with * on school detail pages are interpolated (not directly observed in cross-division matchups)
